Harry Maguire defends ‘excellent goalkeeper’ Andre Onana after poor run of form | OneFootball

Harry Maguire has backed Andre Onana as the Manchester United goalkeeper returns to the side after being dropped for their 4-1 defeat to Newcastle.

Onana was left out of the United squad on the weekend by manager Ruben Amorim after making two high profile errors against Lyon in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final.

The Cameroonian international returns to the side on Thursday night with the tie at 2-2, after second choice Altay Bayindir struggled on his Premier League debut against Newcastle.

With rumours about the Red Devils looking at potential new goalkeepers in the summer transfer window, Maguire backed Onana to bounce back and show just how good he is.

“First and foremost Andre has proved in his past that he is an excellent goalkeeper,” Maguire said. “He has won numerous trophies, he has played Champions League finals. During a career you always have spells of ups and downs and you find yourself a little bit out of form. It is about how you build yourself back in and find that confidence to perform again.

“At the moment he is probably feeling that everything is going against him. You take it game-by-game. He’ll be there tomorrow night and he is a big personality, a big character and he will be looking forward to the game. He will want to show everyone again what he is about.

“Playing in front of Andre it’s great. I have confidence in Andre, he has had a fantastic career. He has great experience and we all know he is an excellent goalkeeper.

“You try your best to ignore it all. Focus on your job, come in on a daily basis and do your best. I always said to myself ‘that’s all you can do’. Tomorrow night is another game of football and you go on that pitch and you give absolutely everything.”

Victory at Old Trafford will see Ruben Amorim’s side progress to the semi-finals, where they could face either Rangers or Athletic Bilbao.
