The goalkeeping position at FC Barcelona is set to undergo a generational change this summer. After having Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Inaki Pena, and Wojciech Szczesny as their starting goalies at different points in the last season, the Blaugranes have now also added Joan Garcia to the mix.

In fact, the Spanish goalkeeper, whose signing was officially completed yesterday after the Catalans paid his €25 million release clause some days ago, is set to be the new starter for Hansi Flick for the next season. Szczesny is expected to be his back-up, while the futures of the other two goalkeepers is highly uncertain.

Pena is looking for a departure to a team where he will get a more prominent role. However, ter Stegen is committed to remain at Barcelona and to fight for the starting spot.

Ter Stegen enjoying vacation in Greece

As things stand, he is currently enjoying a vacation in Greece, and his sole intention is to return to the Catalan club on July 13th for the start of the preseason training.

However, Flick is not looking to have him as a starter for the next season, and a conversation between the coach and the captain was expected to take place soon.

Hansi Flick is yet to talk to the goalkeeper

In this regard, Mundo Deportivo reports that this conversation has not yet taken place, particularly as the German tactician is respectful of the fact that the player is enjoying vacations and does not want to talk about such an important matter on the phone.

Flick is clear that ter Stegen deserves to talk about this issue in a face-to-face conversation, unless the goalkeeper has some immediate concerns. In this case, he can himself call the coach to sort out his issues.

Thus, a meeting between Flick and ter Stegen will take place only in three weeks time, on July 13th, when the team will reassemble at Barcelona for the start of preseason training.
