England goalkeeper Hannah Hampton has called for England fans to get behind the Lionesses at Euro 2025 this summer, as the team looks to win back to back European Championships.

When the Lionesses won Euro 2022 on home soil Hannah Hampton was merely used as a backup to Mary Earps, but this year the Chelsea goalkeeper is without a doubt Sarina Wiegman’s number one.

Hampton credited Earps for paving the way for other goalkeepers after announcing that she had retired from international football before Euro 2025.

Speaking about her experience of being a backup at Euro 2022, Hampton said: “Being involved with your country is always a special experience,’ said the goalkeeper. ‘It brings joy to everyone in the nation when a tournament’s going on.

“You’re in a bubble as a team, but you’ve still got the presence of all the supporters, cheering us on and supporting us along the way, and it never goes unnoticed. I was one of those fans in previous tournaments, so the fact that I’m now on the other end of it is amazing.”

Hampton didn’t play a single minute at Euro 2022 or at the World Cup in 2023 but after signing for Chelsea following the tournament, the Blues goalkeeper finally earned her spot as first choice.

England are of course the European Championship reigning champions and following the team’s success in 2022 the expectations are high for the Lionesses this summer.

Despite the high hopes, Hampton spoke about the team keeping calm ahead of another huge month of football for England.

“We don’t want to put any pressure on ourselves. We want to perform as well as we know we can, because other nations will see it as a failure if they don’t win too.

“Spain are the World Cup holders, Germany just missed out at the last Euros, and France and the Netherlands are coming through. Every nation will see it as a failure if they don’t win. They will face pressure from their own countries and their fans. I don’t think we’re in a different position from any other nation.”

The Lionesses face one of the toughest groups they have ever been drawn in this year, with the Netherlands, France and Wales all lining up to spoil England’s title defence.

“We’re just going to go out and play the football we know we can play. We’ll hold ourselves accountable for everything, maintain our standards and work ethic, and then let’s see where it takes us. We have faith in ourselves, and we need people to get behind us, too.” Hampton continued.

While England may be keen to not set expectations too high before the Euros, they are second favourites to win the tournament at a price of 4/1 with the best UK betting sites.
