Marc Guehi’s proposed £35 million transfer to Liverpool collapsed dramatically on deadline day after Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish blocked the deal at the last moment, leaving the England international frustrated and disappointed.

The defender had been preparing to complete his switch to Anfield, with the clubs having submitted a deal sheet before the 7pm cut-off and Guehi even undergoing the first stage of his medical in London.

A private jet had been lined up to take him to Merseyside, while Palace had gone as far as preparing a farewell video for their captain.

The move unravelled when Oliver Glasner intervened and threatened to resign if Guehi was sold without an adequate replacement. The Austrian coach, who led Palace to FA Cup glory last season, made clear that allowing the 25-year-old to depart on deadline day would undermine the squad’s stability.

Parish sided with his manager, pulling approval despite weeks of negotiations with Liverpool and despite Palace having secured a deal for French Under-20 defender Jaydee Canvot from Toulouse.

Palace’s late attempts to bring in more experienced cover proved unsuccessful, with a proposed move for Brighton centre-back Igor Julio breaking down and other targets failing to materialise before the window closed.

That left Glasner adamant Guehi must remain, and Parish ultimately chose to back him.

For Guehi, the decision came as a bitter blow after handling the situation professionally throughout the summer.

Unlike Newcastle’s Alexander Isak, who pushed to leave for Liverpool, the Palace captain had not agitated for a move and instead continued to perform for his side, even scoring in the 3-0 win away at Aston Villa on Sunday.

The manner of the collapse has left Guehi considering his position at Selhurst Park. Palace teammates are said to share his frustration, believing he earned the right to join the Premier League champions after three years of consistent service.

Liverpool, meanwhile, are expected to revive their interest in January, though the player will be free to discuss pre-contract terms with overseas clubs from that point.

Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Juventus are among those who have tracked his situation closely.

Guehi joined Palace from Chelsea for £18 million in 2021 and has since established himself as one of the most reliable defenders in the Premier League, winning 23 England caps along the way. With his contract set to expire next summer, Palace’s refusal to sell now risks losing their captain for nothing if no agreement is reached.
