Guadeloupe earns first League A win, Guatemala-Costa Rica draw

MIAMI – League A of the 2024/25 Concacaf Nations League continued Monday with the second match of the campaign for teams in Group A.

Guadeloupe closed the September match window with its first-ever win in League A. The other two encounters saw points split, with Martinique-Guyana and Costa Rica-Guatemala ending in stalemates.

Guadeloupe vs. Suriname

Guadeloupe won 1-nil against Suriname to earn its first victory in the top tiere at the Stade Roger Zami in Le Gosier, Guadeloupe.

Matthias Phaeton had the first opportunity on goal in the 18’ with a left-footed drive from the left end of the box but was denied by Suriname goalkeeper Warner Hahn.

Virgil Misidjan came close to finding the opener in the 58’, with a right-footed strike to the bottom right corner saved by Martinique’s Teddy Bartouche Selbonne.

Jordan Leborgne scored the lone goal of the match in the 67’, tucking the ball away into the net from a Thierry Ambrose assist in what resulted to be the match-winner for Guadeloupe.

Ambrose came close to extending the lead in the 77’ with a long-range strike that bounced off the crossbar.

Guadeloupe earned its first points of the campaign and jumped to fourth place in the group. Suriname remains third with three points due to goal difference.

Martinique vs. Guyana

Martinique and Guyana played to a 2-2 draw at Stade Municipal Pierre-Aliker in Fort-de-France, Martinique.

Guyana took the lead in the 14’ through a right-footed finish inside the box from Isaiah Jones.

Martinique went a man down in the 18’ when Florent Poulolo was shown a red card.

Jones secured his brace in the 24’ with a finish using the outside of his foot.

Brighton Labeau capitalized on a loose ball inside the penalty area in the 45'+2 to cut the deficit for Martinique right before the half.

Rudy Varane equalized in the 86’, firing from close range to the bottom left corner following a corner kick for the 2-2 scoreline.

Martinique and Guyana collected their first point in Group A with the draw.

Guatemala vs. Costa Rica

Costa Rica held on to first place in Group A with a nil-nil draw against Guatemala at Estadio Doroteo Guamuch Flores in Guatemala City, Guatemala.

Both teams generated three shots on goal, but neither side could break through for the opening goal. Warren Madrigal of Costa Rica led the way in attack with two shots on target.

Guatemala goalkeeper Nicholas Hagen recorded his first clean sheet of the campaign while collecting three saves. Costa Rica goalkeeper Patrick Sequeira also earned three saves to register his second consecutive clean sheet.

With the result, Costa Rica maintains the pole position on goal difference. Both nations have four points apiece to lead first and second.
