Alex Greenwood says it was an honour to collect her 100th cap for England.
City’s captain reached a century of appearances for the Lionesses when playing the full 90 minutes of their opening assignment at UEFA Euro 2025 – a narrow 2-1 defeat to France.
It represented the latest milestone in her illustrious career and over 11 years on the senior international stage after making her debut in March 2014 against Italy.
Since then, Greenwood has established herself as one of the finest operators in world football while helping her nation to the 2022 Euros.
Although the centre-back thought 100 caps may have been out of reach when making her 50th England appearance, she has paid tribute to those who have helped her on the journey to a century.
“I’m really proud,” she declared on the That Lionesses Podcast.
“When I got to 50 [caps] I remember thinking there wasn’t a chance I’d have 50 more in me to get to 100 and here we are.
“It’s not that I couldn’t believe I could, but I thought it took me a long time to get to 50!
“Around 96 and 97 you become a bit more aware of it. Some people let you know, when you look at the programme ‘it could be this game or that game’.
“I’d also been out quite a while with an injury, so maybe before that I thought it could be a certain game but it didn’t happen because I wasn’t available to play.
“Obviously I’m so proud [to reach 100 caps] and not many players get to say they’ve played 100 times for their country and I’m really grateful to everyone who has been apart of it.
“Whether you play once for your country or 100 times, it’s a real honour to do that.”
Next up for England at the 2025 Euros in Switzerland is a meeting with the Netherlands on Wednesday at 17:00 (UK).
Sarina Wiegman’s side will be aiming to bounce back from the defeat to France and give their prospects of reaching the knockout stages a shot in the arm with three points.
Regardless of the disappointment from losing their opening match at the competition, Greenwood says her and her teammates' mentality to win won’t falter ahead of their next two group games.
She added: “Honestly [we felt] disappointed.
“Naturally you always want to start with a win, but no tournament is won or lost after the first game and it’s important we keep reminding ourselves that.
“The message is clear now, we have to win our next two games and that will be consistent theme now leading up to the Netherlands game and beyond.
“We have to win both and that’s the mentality of the group – that wouldn’t have changed regardless of the outcome of the game [against France].
“We have to stay positive and stick together. This group has a natural way of doing that and nothing will change for us. We’ll review the [France] game honestly because we have to for us to improve and put that game right.
“We’ll put that to bed and concentrate on Wednesday [against the Netherlands].”
