NJ/NY Gotham FC and the rest of the NWSL will be back in action in less than two weeks. Until then, players will continue to train while others are still in the middle of their continental competitions with their national teams. Plus, there is hope that the team is working hard to sign or trade for a few new players this summer.
Until then, there is plenty to discuss. Hence, here is the next Gotham FC news roundup that includes a contract extension and more.
On Friday, Gotham FC continued to lock down some key players by extending Taryn Torres' contract through 2027. Similar to Tierna Davidson, her contract was updated. Those details were not released.
Torres has been great for Gotham, especially as a depth piece. But she has proven she can start and play at a high level. She also continues to develop each year. This was a great decision by the club, but it also means the midfielder gets to stay in New Jersey, a place she has been for her entire professional career.
As mentioned, there are continental competitions going on at this time. Four Gotham FC players are moving on in their respective tournaments' semifinals. Jess Carter and England, Esther González and Spain, and Ann-Katrin Berger and Germany will play in the semifinals of the 2025 UEFA Women's Championship. Then, Stella Nyamekye and Ghana will play in the semifinals of the Women's Africa Cup of Nations. Meanwhile, Gabi Portilho and Brazil are still in the group round of the Copa América Femenina.
Berger had the biggest performance for Germany this past week. After an awful game against Sweden in the group round, they had to face France in the quarterfinals. Despite being down a player since the 13th minute, Germany managed to force extra time and then a penalty kick shootout to move on in Euro 2025. She had nine saves during the match and then two in the shootout. The Gotham goalkeeper was deemed the hero for Germany.
In case one missed the news on Sunday, Carter revealed she is suffering racial abuse during EURO 2025. As a result, she is going to stay off social media, for it appears that most of the abuse is occurring through that medium.
It is absolutely awful that Carter is going through that, where she has to step away from social media platforms. Hopefully, her speaking out will allow for some to be found and either exposed or face hate speech charges. The Gotham FC player was courageous to speak out, and everyone at Skyscraper Blues stands with her.
