New York City FC just recently won a superb game against Atlanta United FC despite missing quite a few players due to injury and international duty. They outplayed the Georgia team, scored four goals, and secured a clean sheet. Tomás Romero had a decent first start in Major League Soccer for the Pigeons, which is not shocking since he had stints as a starter before. Yes, he got away with a foul in the box, but overall, he had a good performance, making three saves.
When all is said and done, one can say that NYCFC is having an okay season, for they have had some great wins and poor losses. There have been some growing pains under Pascal Jansen, but fans can easily see what the head coach is trying to do when watching games, even those the Pigeons struggle in. The potential is massive, though, and he could possibly lead the team to better days.
What would help is for some of the players, especially the bench players, to step up. It would help the team find the consistency they have been lacking. Although one could argue that NYCFC is slowly improving with that. Since the terrible loss to CF Montréal, the Bronx side is 3-1-2, with the draw to Nashville SC feeling like a win.
Notably, the away fixture to CF Montréal will be the Pigeons' next match. How they play there might determine whether the team is on the right track. Of course, on paper, they should win. But somehow the Canadian side beat them at home and now has won two in a row against them. Jansen must ensure he does not make it three in a row.
Meanwhile, NYCFC has been better with scoring. As fans will recall, despite earning a few wins, they played eight games where they scored one or no goals. In the last five, they have scored two or more in four of those matches and won three. That was a major issue during the period they were struggling.
Additionally, it is vital for the Pigeons to limit their mistakes. Over the last few fixtures, it appears they have done so. That will help in the long run, for mistakes can lead to losses despite good play.
NYCFC appears to be on the right track and good times might be a large part of their future. If players step up, goals are scored, mistakes are few and far between, and Jansen's coaching clicks entirely with the players, then the team can be successful before any new signings are made.
