The signing of Jamie Gittens for Chelsea was announced as a done deal by the likes of Fabrizio Romano last night, and could be announced as soon as today.
The pursuit of the winger has lasted a couple of months. although we were already being linked to him back in January. It’s fair to say the reaction among fans has been fairly tepid. We’re all aware of his talent, but few of us see him as the sort of sure thing we’re looking for to immediately upgrade our wide areas.

Will he really be better than Jadon Sancho, last season’s Man City produced, Dortmund developed winger? Time will tell. But there is someone out there who knows far better than us what Gittens is capable of.
Seb Stafford-Bloor writes about the Bundesliga for the Athletic, and last night he fired out a series of Tweets which explained his thoughts on the signing:
“I’ve watched most of the minutes Jamie Gittens played for Borussia Dortmund and this is a good signing for Chelsea,” Stafford-Bloor wrote.
“[He has] speed, yes, but he’s such an agile dribbler, too, and so good at creating space to shoot.”
It was no surprise that Chelsea’s interest was aroused in January, after Gittens really peaked. But then things got a little more difficult for him. Stafford-Bloor explained that too:
“The second half of last season was difficult. He’d been asked to play much more football than he was used to, was playing for a team in strife and then adapted to a new coach who didn’t really use wingers in the same way.
“Jamie Gittens will arrive a little short of confidence most likely, but that’s a short term issue. Long term, he can flat-out play.”
That’s all very comforting, and we can’t wait to see the new guy in action – although we’ll be waiting until August.
