Former Real Madrid striker Fernando Morientes has heaped praise on young forward Gonzalo Garcia for his impressive performances at the FIFA Club World Cup.
The 21-year-old has been one of the big surprises of the tournament, scoring three goals and providing an assist in four matches.
His contribution has been especially important for Xabi Alonso’s team during the absence of star forward Kylian Mbappe.
Speaking on the popular Spanish program El Partidazo de COPE, Morientes did not hide his excitement about Gonzalo’s form.
“I loved Gonzalo; it’s great news for Real Madrid,” said the former striker. “I’ve always believed that youth players need to give everything to earn their place in the first team, and Gonzalo has done just that.”
Morientes went further and encouraged Real Madrid to trust Gonzalo as their backup striker for the season, instead of spending big on a new signing.
“If Real Madrid were thinking about players like Budimir from Osasuna or Vlahovic from Juventus, they would have to spend a lot of money.
“I think keeping Gonzalo makes perfect sense,” he explained. “Gonzalo will get his minutes and have his impact, but in this Club World Cup, he’s clearly been the standout news.”
Morientes also spoke about what will happen when Kylian Mbappe returns to the team. He admitted it would be tough on Gonzalo: “It’s unfair, but Gonzalo has already shown what he can do.”
The former striker then opened a debate about Real Madrid’s squad, questioning whether the club should stick with Gonzalo or give the chance to Endrick, who has now recovered.
“I would like Endrick to go on loan so he can play more minutes elsewhere, and for Gonzalo to take on the role that Endrick was expected to have,” Morientes concluded.
