Onana’s Future in Doubt as Monaco Circle: High Stakes and High Pressure for United’s Number One

Error-Strewn Season Raises Questions

Monaco are interested in signing Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana, according to Sky in Italy. The news comes off the back of a turbulent debut campaign in English football for the Cameroonian international.

United’s faith in Onana, who arrived from Inter Milan for £47.3 million in July 2023, has been severely tested. Despite playing a pivotal role in their FA Cup win, Onana has been under heavy scrutiny, particularly after “making numerous high-profile errors at Old Trafford.”

Opta data reveals a stark truth: “Onana’s total of eight errors leading to goals in all competitions since the start of the 2023/24 season is the second-highest of all Premier League players, behind only Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen.”

Monaco Consider a Swoop

Sky report that “the French club are understood to be exploring the conditions of a deal for the 29-year-old.” Monaco finished third in Ligue 1 and will compete in the Champions League next season. They are now managed by the experienced Adi Hutter, formerly of Eintracht Frankfurt.

For Onana, the opportunity to reset in France might appeal. After 101 appearances and diminishing trust under United’s management, the signs are clear. He started just one of the last four Premier League games, with Turkish stopper Altay Bayindir given the nod in his place.

Amorim’s Overhaul in Full Swing

United’s summer is shaping up to be a transitional one under new manager Ruben Amorim. A clearout is underway. “Christian Eriksen, Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelof have all been released,” and speculation surrounds key attackers including “Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford, Antony and Alejandro Garnacho.”

Meanwhile, reinforcements are arriving. Matheus Cunha has been signed from Wolves in a £62.5 million deal, with Bryan Mbeumo and Viktor Gyokeres also in their sights.

Crunch Start to 2025/26 Season

United’s new-look side will be tested early. “Manchester United will kick off the new Premier League season with a blockbuster Super Sunday game against Arsenal at Old Trafford on August 17, live on Sky Sports.”

They then face Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool within the first two months — a brutal gauntlet for any team, let alone one mid-rebuild. Whether Onana will still be wearing red when that whistle blows remains uncertain.

Tone: Concerned – Manchester United Fan Perspective

It’s hard not to feel nervous reading this update. Onana’s arrival was meant to signal a shift to a modern, confident keeper who could pass and command. What we’ve seen instead is a player who looks spooked, unsure, and increasingly isolated.

The numbers don’t lie. Eight errors leading to goals in one season is a red flag, and if Monaco are circling now, the question must be whether it’s better to cut losses early rather than double down on a gamble gone wrong.

Yet, there’s a worry here too. Are we becoming too quick to discard talent? Onana was one of Europe’s standout keepers just 18 months ago. Perhaps the problem lies not just with him, but the defensive structure and the lack of leadership around him.

Letting him go now feels premature unless a better option is already lined up. Bayindir is still untested, and United cannot afford to go into a high-stakes season — with a daunting start — without a stable No.1.

If Onana stays, he must rediscover his form immediately. If he goes, United must find not just a replacement, but a true anchor in goal. Either way, this could define Ruben Amorim’s debut campaign.
