Go Ahead Eagles have extended Mats Deijl’s contract by a year, keeping the captain in Deventer until the summer of 2028. The Cup-winning 28-year-old put pen to paper yesterday.

This term, Deijl started his fifth season at Go Ahead and his second as captain. The club picked him up from FC Den Bosch in the summer of 2021, after promotion to the Eredivisie. Deijl fought his way into the starting lineup, became a regular, and took over the captain’s armband from Bas Kuipers just over a year ago.

This deal positively contradicts the situation for the Eagles last summer, whereby the right-back expressed his desire to embark on an adventure abroad, provided a suitable club came forward. Several options presented themselves, but none convinced Deijl to leave.

“I still feel very much at home at Go Ahead Eagles,” Deijl said on the club’s website. “We’ve already created some wonderful memories together in recent seasons, winning the play-offs, performing well in the Eredivisie, and winning the cup as the absolute highlight. It’s a great challenge for us to put the club back on the map next season.

“The Europa League will certainly be a great platform. The club continues to make progress, which is wonderful to see and wonderful to be a part of. That’s another reason to extend our contract.”

As KNVB Cup winners, the Deventer side will play in the eight-match Europa League phase. The draw will be made next Friday, August 29th. “We are pleased to have been able to extend Mats’s contract,” says technical manager Marc van Hintum. “Since his arrival in Deventer, Mats has proven to be a stable force within the squad. He is also an excellent ambassador for the club.”
