It doesn’t seem like anyone can stop this Girona side at the moment, and the title race in Spain may very well go down to the wire.

The hosts brushed aside any pressure from Real Madrid’s win over the weekend and handled this clash against a lacklustre Alavés with ease.

Their impressive form in front of goal, four shots on target and three goals, was led by Artem Dovbyk. The Ukrainian is only behind Jude Bellingham for most goal contributions in LaLiga (14 and 15 respectively).

He first leapt highest and headed home the opener before securing a brace from the penalty spot. A slick team-move was sandwiched in between those goals as Portu rolled home one of his own.

The three strikes mean Girona are now the third-highest-scoring team in Europe’s top five leagues (41 goals), surpassing Manchester City. Only Bayern Munich (47) and Bayer Leverkusen (42) have more.

Unfortunately for Alavés, who are the second lowest scorers in LaLiga, two shots on target were far from enough to kickstart a potential comeback.

Rubén Duarte hit the crossbar late on to sum up a frustrating night for the 14th-placed side.

Girona now hold a two-point lead over Real Madrid at the top. Three of the last four sides to have 44 points after 17 games went on to win the title.
