Liverpool remain top of the Champions League group stage table and on the brink of last 16 qualification with a marginal 1-0 away win against Girona at the Estadi Montilivi.

Mo Salah’s second-half penalty was enough to see the group leaders win another game despite an abundance of missed chances from the home side. Only three minutes in Joe Gomez had a powerful short-ranged header parried away by Girona keeper Paulo Gazzaniga following a sumptuous corner from Andy Robertson.

The Reds followed up their quick start two minutes later when a neat ball played in from Ryan Gravenberch reached Darwin Nunez who could have done better striking the ball straight at Gazzaniga from just inside the box.

Girona responded well after Miguel Gutierrez’s cross narrowly missed the outstretched foot of Daley Blind subsequently spilling over to Bryan Gil who shot straight at Allison from point-blank range.

On the thirteen-minute mark, a long ball over the top fell to the feet of Bryan Gil who was through on goal, however, he slipped inside the area allowing Allison to calmly collect the loose ball.

As the home side continued to pile on the pressure Liverpool spurned a decent opportunity, Nunez failed to convert a neat through ball from Mo Salah.

Allison had yet another scare ten minutes before halftime when Yaser Asprilla’s long-range thunderbolt was exquisitely palmed away with the keeper at full stretch after the shot was destined for the top-left corner.

Girona started the second half with the same intensity after Arnaut Danjuma went alone from outside the area to force another fine stop from Allison Liverpool began to apply some pressure which eventually paid off when a penalty was given to the Reds following Donny Van De Beek’s shove on Luiz Diaz after a lengthy VAR check.

Star man Salah coolly converted to put Liverpool 1-0 up 61 minutes in, silencing the Estadi Montilivi and subsequently sealed Liverpool’s sixth UCL win from six games to put them on the brink of qualification for the last 16.
