Grimsby Town's dramatic Carabao Cup victory over Manchester United last night has thrust the Mariners firmly into the spotlight - but humbling Ruben Amorim's Premier League side is not their only claim to fame this season.
The League Two giant-killers raced into an early lead against the Red Devils at Blundell Park last night, thanks to goals from Charles Vernam and Tyrell Warren, but were pegged back by late strikes from Bryan Mbeumo and Harry Maguire for the top flight side.
On the verge of a heart-breaking defeat, Grimsby goalkeeper Christy Pym saved Matheus Cunha's potentially deciding penalty before United forward Mbeumo missed from 12 yards to hand the Mariners a famous 12-11 shootout win to progress into the third round of the competition.
Grimsby now face Championship side Sheffield Wednesday in the next round, and David Artell's men will be buoyed by their fantastic start to the 2025/26 campaign - their thrilling victory over Amorim's spluttering United maintaining their unbeaten record across all competitions this term.
In fact, only two EFL teams can match Grimsby in this regard: with only League One clubs Cardiff City and Bradford similarly unbeaten at this stage of the season.
It's back to the bread and butter of league football this weekend for Artell's side, and Grimsby's spirits will no doubt be sky high when they return to League Two action this Saturday against Bristol Rovers.
