Gianluigi Donnarumma: Two factors holding back Man United’s brilliant PSG raid

One position Manchester United were tipped to strengthen this summer was their goalkeeping department.
Erratic performances last season proved costly, with goalkeeping errors robbing the team of valuable points.
Although a shake-up in goal was anticipated, Andre Onana is expected to stay, while Altay Bayındır has yet to be moved on.
The likelihood of signing a new goalkeeper now appears uncertain.
Still, one must ask: if United were offered the chance to sign a world-class shot-stopper, would they pass it up?
That opportunity may have arrived in the form of Gianluigi Donnarumma.
Paris Saint-Germain’s pursuit of Lille’s Lucas Chevalier has cast fresh doubt over Donnarumma’s future at the Parc des Princes.
The 26-year-old’s decision to reject a contract extension offer, with his deal expiring next summer, may have prompted PSG to act on Chevalier.
Yet a final decision on whether to retain or release Donnarumma rests with head coach Luis Enrique.
Nonetheless, the Italian is believed to be considering his options.
As per reports relayed by The Peoples Person, Donnarumma could be tempted to move if convinced by the vision and his suitability to the project on offer.
The whisper of Donnarumma being up for grabs should be a hard one for the 20-time English champions to ignore
Yes, several top European clubs have shown interest.
But United fans will be hoping that INEOS might do enough to persuade him to choose Old Trafford.
While hope had begun to build, it has since emerged that United are not currently in a position to complete the deal.
Ligue 1 journalist Marc Mechenoua has dropped a bombshell regarding United’s Donnarumma chase.
He admits, “Manchester United has inquired about Gianluigi Donnarumma’s situation with PSG.
“However, unless there is a significant clear-out, the Red Devils are unlikely to pursue this matter further. Chelsea has also sought information.”
For some United fans, that should be frustrating.
A top-tier goalkeeper is seemingly within reach, yet United, according to Mechenoua, appear constrained by financial limitations, something The Daily Mail also emphasise, noting:
“Despite this (transfer opportunity), the Italian No 1 would likely still command a hefty transfer fee, not to mention wages well in excess of Onana’s.”
Either way, while the prospect of signing the Club World Cup finalist looks slim, there is still some hope in the transfer.
If United can shift players deemed surplus to requirements such as Antony, Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho and Tyrell Malacia, they may yet find room to finance the Donnarumma deal.
Should these outgoings happen before Chelsea or Manchester City make their move for the ex-AC Milan star, United could still return to the table, offering Onana the high-level competition he needs.
