Just when it seemed the Manchester United goalkeeping chase could end with either Emiliano Martinez or Senne Lammens signing, Gianluigi Donnarumma has forcefully entered the conversation.
United, long-time admirers of Donnarumma, appear to have been handed a golden opportunity to bring him to Old Trafford.
Over the weekend, The Peoples Person relayed reports that Paris Saint-Germain are considering selling the 26-year-old.
The Italian stopper, whose deal at Parc des Princes expires next summer, has yet to agree to new terms and is reportedly disappointed with the current offer.
In response to the contract standoff, the French giants are now pushing hard to sign LOSC Lille’s Lucas Chevalier.
Chevalier is a top keeper in his own right; even United were impressed by him, but they never turned their interest into a formal approach.
His proposed switch to PSG could endanger Donnarumma’s starting spot under Luis Enrique.
One question now arises: Is the former AC Milan number one actively seeking a move?
Journalist Fabrice Hawkins has candidly unpacked the Italian international’s situation. He admits:
“Gianluigi Donnarumma has not yet left, even though his agents are exploring the market to find him a new destination.”
He adds, “The Italian goalkeeper has options. Manchester United, Manchester City, Galatasaray, and Saudi clubs are interested. However, he remains attached to PSG and will only leave if a project fully suits him.”
On whether PSG have decided on his exit, Hawkins says:
“Internally, the possibility of seeing Chevalier and Donnarumma compete, with Luis Enrique making the final decision, is not ruled out.”
While Luis Enrique’s call may be pivotal, United could yet sway Donnarumma with a compelling pitch.
After enduring erratic goalkeeping from Andre Onana (and even Altay Bayindir) last season, United are in desperate need of a goalkeeping upgrade, and Donnarumma could well be that.
With the Italian open to persuasion, the ball is firmly in INEOS’ court.
The transfer battle looks stiff. However, United could convince him by highlighting the central role he would play in Amorim’s project, while also emphasising their ambition to win the league by 2028.
That vision might convince Donnarumma to agitate for a move to the Theatre of Dreams, and with PSG having already landed another top keeper, they may prefer to cash in rather than risk losing him on a free.
