Real Madrid megastar Kylian Mbappe will face only a one-game ban after a terrible challenge against Deportivo Alaves which saw him see a red card.

A lot has been said about the sanction imposed by the authorities, especially from the Barcelona camp, who are not happy with the length of the suspension.

It is, however, ultimately the referee’s observation that served as the basis for the decision. Given that the official saw Mbappe to be competing for the ball in a neutral position, it has not been deemed to be serious enough for a longer suspension.

Bordalas’ verdict

Getafe manager Jose Bordalas faced the press earlier today and was asked about the sanction imposed on Mbappe and his opinion on whether it was too short for the foul that had been committed.

“I don’t usually give my opinion on this aspect, and even less of a player who is not ours. I saw the game, the challenge is disproportionate, but the intentionality is what counts in the end,” he began, seemingly siding with the Real Madrid star.

Surprisingly, he even went on to continue justifying the sanction imposed and did not deem the foul committed by the Real Madrid star to be too heinous given that it was not done with malicious intent.

“We know that it is a contact sport that is played at a high pace and sometimes in images; when the image stops, everything seems much more serious and spectacular than it really is.”

In the end, however, Bordalas refused to take any particular side and stayed neutral on his stance.

“I’m not going to give my opinion on whether the sanction is too much or too little.”

Had Mbappe’s sanction been extended by even one game, he would notably miss Real Madrid’s game against Getafe.

Nevertheless, the honesty from Bordalas only goes to show how Mbappe’s foul may be blown out of proportion. After all, there was no malicious intent involved.
