Manager Christian Wuck has picked an experienced squad for the tournament, which features just two players from the Women’s Super League.

Manchester City defender Rebecca Knaak will receive her first taste of a major international tournament after making her senior debut in a 2-2 draw with the Netherlands in February.

Also making the squad is Sjoeke Nusken, who made 36 appearances for WSL champions Chelsea this past season.

Former Chelsea goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger, and former West Ham defender Kathrin Hendrich, have also been selected by Wuck.

Six of the players who started the Euro 2022 final against England are not in the squad this time around. Those who have kept their place in the Germany squad include captain Giulia Gwinn, Hendrich, Sara Dabritz, Lea Schuller, and Jule Brand.

Alexandra Popp who was joint top-scorer alongside Beth Mead at Euro 2022, retired from international duty last September.

Germany coach explains squad decision

Germany manager Christian Wuck addressed why he didn’t select two players in his Women’s Euro 2025 squad.

North Carolina Courage defender Felicitas Rauch has previously criticised Wuck for a lack of communication around his decision not to pick her for earlier squads. Rauch though is among 12 players who have been included in a reserve list.

Addressing the decision to leave out Rauch, he said: “We had to make a fundamental decision with Felicitas Rauch: whether to rely on experience or go with a “young gun” like Franziska Kett.

“Franzi performed very well in the last game against Austria, and we as a coaching staff decided to go with her instead of Felicity.”

Rauch is not the only player who has missed out on the tournament after criticising their head coach. Spain’s record goalscorer Jenni Hermoso hit out at manager Montse Tome after she was omitted from their Euro 2025 squad.

Wuck was also asked why he didn’t select 18-year-old Bayern Munich star Alara Sehitler.

He said: “Alara faces a lot of competition in her position. But we also know that she still has a few years ahead of her at this top level. There’s a certain amount of competition in the six and eight positions, and we’ve preferred other players for this tournament.”

Wuck went on to add: “It is important to me that decisions made were never against a player, rather always in favour of one, and we made each with great conviction.

“I have full faith in my players and in our decisions and I am sure that we will deliver a successful European Championship campaign with this squad.”
