Liverpool’s chances of Florian Wirtz have got a lot better in recent days. It was once believed that Bayern Munich, Manchester City and Real Madrid would be the clubs leading the chase for the 22-year-old.
But the Reds have surged to the top of the queue. Bayern and Man City are said to be out of the running, while it will take a monumental effort from Madrid coach Xabi Alonso to convince Wirtz his future lies in the Spanish capital.
That’s because Wirtz appears to be convinced by the project in front of him at Anfield. Now all that is missing is an agreement between Liverpool and Bayer Leverkusen - who are said to be holding out for €150m for their attacking diamond.
German media now reckons the move to Anfield is just a formality as Liverpool have dropped their interest in RB Leipzig midfielder Xavi Simons, leaving the path clear for a bid on Wirtz.
Simons, 22, was on the Reds’ radar but in an item discussing the playmaker’s potential availability this summer, BILD states that Liverpool are, in fact, signing Wirtz.
Bayern, too, have dropped their efforts to sign the Dutchman - while Chelsea are now regarded as the leading contenders.
“Sporting director Marcel Schäfer (40) recently confirmed that no club has yet contacted him regarding the 26-time capped international,” the report reads.
“Liverpool FC, which had recently been rumored to have a loose interest, is signing Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz (22),” the report reads.
“According to BILD, Bayern Munich have also internally distanced themselves from the idea of signing Xavi. Xavi's goal is said to be the Premier League, with a loose lead leading to Chelsea FC.”
