This season, Rafael Leao has not been the star that AC Milan needed him to be on so many occasions, which is why Stefano Pioli offered him a move out of the spotlight last week, but his response must continue.
After last season’s performances, many thought this season would break the curse of Milan’s 20-goal Serie A player. However, it has not gone that way for Leao, as he has struggled on occasions. Regardless of this, though, he has still contributed 17 times, showing the quality he possesses whilst not at his best.
As Gazzetta (seen below) writes, the end of the season is when the Rossoneri often look to Leao for the final bit of inspiration, but this season, the same cannot be said. Leao was on the bench last weekend but responded perfectly with a goal and an assist.
Reports suggest that he will again be among the substitutes this weekend, and Pioli will hope that he responds similarly, offering a threat from the bench.

Whilst this could be viewed as punishment, it should be viewed as a lesson. It is no secret that Leao has struggled this season, and that has been shown by the fans’ reaction to his game and his reaction to it.
Leao has earned the right to be Milan’s highest earner, but there are times when the burden of that title seemingly affects his game, and it is understandable to some degree. He is 24 years old, and there is a significant weight on his shoulders, being the face of the Rossoneri project.
Therefore, in Pioli’s final moments as the Diavolo’s coach, perhaps, this is his final lesson to Leao. A lesson which offers some relaxation to Leao and attempts to remove the pressure placed upon him. A lesson, which if successful, could bring a 20-goal season.
