Though their record (0-3-6) may not indicate it, the 30th MLS regular season has been historic. Not only did veteran midfielder Diego Fagundez play in his 400th professional game, but he also scored his 150th career goal in the league.

Another milestone involving 400 appearances happened on Saturday against Austin FC. Head Coach Greg Vanney also accomplished this feat. As a player and a coach, he locked up this achievement over the weekend.

The journey to 400 games for Greg Vanney

The current Galaxy head coach debuted in MLS along with his original team, the Los Angeles Galaxy. From 1996 to 2021, Vanney played for the darling franchise after being drafted 17th overall in the league's first-ever MLS College Draft.

Despite not winning a championship with them, the team would appear in three MLS Cup Finals (1996, 1999, and 2001). The defender scored 21 goals in 168 appearances with the MLS Western Conference powerhouse

For four seasons, Vanney left MLS to play for Bastia, a French soccer club that belongs to Ligue 2. In 2005, he made his return to the States playing for FC Dallas. He scored once in his 53 appearances for the franchise.

In 2007, Vanney split time between D.C. United and the Colorado Rapids. In his final year as a player, he rejoined the LA Galaxy in 2008.

For more than a decade, Vanney represented his country and played for the United States Men's National Team. In 37 appearances, he scored one goal.

It wasn't until 2014 that Vanney would begin coaching. His debut on the sidelines came with Toronto FC. In a four-season span, the team would appear in three MLS Cup Finals. The only won they were victors in was the 2017 rematch against the Seattle Sounders.

In 2021, Vanney joined the Los Angeles Galaxy. Last year, he won his second MLS Cup title as a coach. He did so with his nephew, Eriq Zavaleta, on the squad. Former LA Galaxy midfielder Marky Delgado was a part of both squads, too.

Vanney remains the head coach for the Los Angeles Galaxy. It remains to be seen how long that will last given the team's disappointing start to the 2025 MLS regular season.

Regardless, this LA Galaxy legend has earned this honor. While his 400th game ended in a 1-0 defeat, he has another chance at victory next Saturday when the defending champions host the Portland Timbers.
