Galatasaray are preparing for a busy summer. The Turkish club might want to reinforce their squad with world-class players. Among their targets is an unexpected name: Ilkay Gundogan. The German midfielder, who currently plays for Manchester City, could be set for a change of scenery in the coming months. Although he still has a year left on his contract with the English side, his future is far from assured. The Istanbul club believe they can convince the veteran to join their project and lead a new cycle in Turkey. This interest has sparked movement both in Manchester and elsewhere.

According to journalist Yağız Sabuncuoğlu, Galatasaray have already started talks to sign the player. The club believes that his experience, his ability to control games and his presence in the dressing room can make an immediate difference. Saudi Arabia also want to sign the 34-year-old, but the German prefers a move to Turkey.

Gundogan made 50 appearances in the 2024/25 season, proving he is still fit. Guardiola counts on him and values what he brings to the team. However, the possibility of a new challenge in a different environment is starting to weigh more heavily on the player’s mind.

T4O Opinion:

Letting Gundogan go is not an easy decision for Manchester City. The midfielder has been a key player for years. His reading of the game, his mettle under pressure and his ability to pop up at decisive moments are virtues that few have in the dressing room. Although he is 34 years old, he has not dropped his level. Guardiola still trusts Gundogan, and his departure would create an important gap.

If the club decides to let him go, they would have to look for a strong replacement. However, that process does not guarantee immediate results. Moreover, letting go of a leader without a well-thought-out transition can affect the dynamics of the group.

On the other hand, denying him an exit can also be counterproductive. If the player’s desire is to look for something different and to close his career in a different environment, retaining him out of obligation could break the harmony. Gundogan has already won everything with City. Forcing him to stay could limit the performance of someone who has given so much. Galatasaray represents an opportunity for him to play an important role. At this point in his career, that has a special value. If he is convinced, the logical thing to do would be to let him go with gratitude. City have resources, but filling his void will not be simple or immediate.
