Milan CEO Giorgio Furlani admits ‘last season didn’t go the way we wanted,’ but the arrival of coach Max Allegri and director of sport Igli Tare confirm ‘our ambition is to win trophies.’

The Rossoneri had a chaotic campaign with two different coaches, as Paulo Fonseca was fired in December and Sergio Conceicao saw out the term before being let go.

Although they won the Supercoppa Italiana in only Conceicao’s second game in charge, they lost the Coppa Italia Final to Bologna and failed to qualify for any European tournament.

“I did not try to hide it and there would be no point trying to hide it: last season did not go the way we wanted,” said Furlani at a publicity event.

“We begin again from this season with the same objective as every year, which is to be competitive to win the tournaments that we are in.”

There have been significant changes in the club infrastructure, as after a year they hired a new director of sport, former Lazio chief Tare.

It was also the return to San Siro of coach Allegri after more than a decade, having in the meantime had two spells at Juventus.

“Tare and Allegri represent very important arrivals for our structure, we are working co-operatively with them to ensure this is a successful season. The first sensations are good, but until we start playing and winning games, that doesn’t count for much,” added Furlani.

“They are certainly professionals with vast experience, recognised for being at the top of their professions. Their careers and trophy cabinets speak for them, and I repeat, our ambition is to win trophies. We are working well together and hope that the first match on August 23 goes the right way.”

Milan will compete in Serie A and the Coppa Italia this season, but also participate in the Supercoppa Italiana Final Four with Napoli, Inter and Bologna.
