Both Mainz and Kiel targeted three points ahead of the game. After their unbeaten streak ended in Dortmund, Bo Henriksen’s side aim a quick return to winning ways. Meanwhile, Kiel hope to put pressure on Heidenheim and Bochum in the race for survival.
The return of Phillipp Mwene, who was suspended for the Dortmund trip, caused the only change in Mainz’s lineup as his introduction left the captain Silvan Widmer on the bench. Kiel’s only change also involved a fullback with US Olympian John Tolkin back in the starting XI.
The visitors started the game brightly as Robin Zentner pulled a great save from Lasse Rosenboom’s shot in the tenth minute. Ten minutes later, it was Mainz’s turn to nearly open the scoring when Jonathan Burkardt was denied by the post.
Having scored in each of their away games so far this season, Bundesliga’s debutants were at it again when Alexander Bernhardsson surprised the entire Mainz backline with a stunning strike. The Swede’s goal would certainly make the highlight reel of end-of-season review shows.
The Storks reduced Mainz’s chances until Anthony Caci hit the woodwork in the hour mark. Soon after, Zentner was called up once again as he blocked Armin Gigović from sealing the points for the visitors.
Mainz regained control in the final 15 minutes, and their efforts were rewarded when substitute Nelson Weiper leveled the score. The 05ers initially planned to have Weiper play for their struggling U23 side, but the lanky striker ended up being the difference maker for the first-team.
The goal changed the atmosphere in the MEWA Arena as Mainz pushed for a late winner. In the closing stages, referee Frank Willenborg dished out yellow cards to both sides, including one for the emotional Henriksen.
Mainz remained in fourth place, but they’ll now have to look over their shoulders in the race for a Champions League spot. Kiel remained at the foot of the standings as they only have six games to save their Bundesliga status.
