Ruben Amorim has clarified his comments on Sunday when he declared his Manchester United side being one of the worst in the club’s history, following a 3-1 home loss to Brighton.

Three days on, ahead of a return to Old Trafford for the Europa League fixture against Rangers, Amorim clarified his comments: “I’m saying the obvious. If you want I can be delusional and say different things. I say it as I see it.

“I said to the players and I said to you, I think it’s a good thing to be really honest with you. If you want me to say different things. You saw one thing, I saw one thing, and I tell you a different thing, I can start to do it, it’s easier for me.”

The Portuguese coach continued: “I gave you that headline and I’m frustrated sometimes and sometimes I should not say that in that terms but it is what it is.

“Sometimes it’s really hard to hide the frustration in some moments but the good thing is that I said the same things differently in the dressing room five minutes before. So the response was quite normal because I’m really blunt with my players.”

Despite the United boss admitting that he said the same thing to his players, he maintains defence of his squad, “I was talking more for myself than for my players.

“Find a coach that starts a job and loses seven or eight games in the first ten. So it is more for me.

“Every time you push that the players are not good enough, but I never put the spotlight on my players.

Nevertheless, Amorim concedes that “we are performing really badly and our results are really bad at the moment. So it’s everything together, the players, the staff, the technical staff.

“So I’m not taking responsibility, I’m just pointing out that I have the biggest responsibility for the performance and the results because I’m the coach and I have that responsibility.

“I’m not taking responsibility from the players. What I was saying is that you have to look really hard to find a team like Manchester United in 10 games, we lost seven games.

“And that is on me because it’s the same players doing worse with a new coach. That’s my only concern at the moment. But I’m not taking anything away from the players.”

Despite the poor league form, United are one of only four teams in the 36-team league phase of the Europa League unbeaten, and sit in seventh place.
