Nuno Tavares is enjoying an astonishing start to life at Lazio as evidenced by his record-breaking statistics.
The 24-year-old was reduced to a forgotten figure at Arsenal after two loan stints at Olympique Marseille and Nottingham Forest. Last summer, the left-back sealed a loan move to Lazio with an obligation to buy set at €5 million. And based on the initial signs, this could turn out to be a real bargain for the Italian capital side.
The Portuguese full-back missed the first couple of matches of the season through injury, but immediately made up for lost time by producing two sublime assists for Taty Castellanos and Boulaye Dia on his debut against Milan. In Florence, Tavares picked up Mario Gila with an exquisite corner for the opener.
Last weekend, the former Benfica man raised his tally to four assists in his four appearances for the club by creating the opener for Matteo Guendouzi in the 3-2 victory over Torino. So according to Il Corriere dello Sport, no defender in Europe’s Top Five League has produced as many assists as Tavares so far this season.
Moreover, the Roman newspaper notes that the new Lazio signing is the first Serie A player to produce four assists in his first four league appearances since Opta began to collect the stats in 2004.
Tavares has yet to make his senior debut for his country, only earning caps for Portugal’s various youth squads. Nevertheless, this could swiftly change if his superb form for the Biancocelesti continues.
