Following the drama-filled Merseyside derby on Wednesday night, we’re having a look at the best captaincy picks ahead of the weekend round of fixtures in GW25.

Ahead of GW24 we picked Ipswich livewire Omari Hutchinson as our surprise pick, and despite falling to a 2-1 defeat to fellow relegation candidates Southampton, the young Englishman caused numerous amounts of problems for the Saints defence throughout.

He earned a disappointing 2 points even though he was only a very affordable 5.2m, however we feel bringing in the 21-year-old was a risk worth taking.

Let’s hope our surprise pick for GW25 can get among the goals Saturday afternoon!

FPL GW25 Best Captain Options: The Usual Suspects

  • Mo Salah (13.7m)
  • Expected points: 14.74

There’s another double gameweek for the Leagues top-scorer, with majority of FPL owners licking their lips following a brilliant return of 29 points during GW24.

The Egyptian goal machine has lined up 13 times against this weekend’s opponents Wolverhampton Wanders in the league, with an impressive 12 wins to his name.

Red’s fans will hope that form can continue after their last-gasp draw with neighbours Everton in the last derby in Goodison Park on Wednesday night.

Despite having little involvement in the match, the league’s top scorer was on the scoresheet to put Liverpool 2-1 ahead in the 73rd minute only to be pegged back deep into injury time.

Arne Slot’s men were also knocked out of the FA cup last week after a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Plymouth Argyle.

Talisman Salah was rested for the trip to the Championship side and will be keen to make his mark against a club that he has had little joy scoring against so far in his career.

The Reds also travel to Villa Park in GW25 as their hectic schedule ramps up a notch, earlier this year Liverpool recorded a 2-0 victory over Villa at Anfield with Salah producing an excellent performance scoring once and assisting another.

  1. Cole Palmer (11.2m)
  2. Expected Points: 6.21

In the first League fixture between Chelsea and Brighton, Cole Palmer had 4 goals against the Seagulls by halftime.

For that reason alone, they will be keeping a close eye on the Blues star man when they welcome Enzo Maresca’s side to the Amex on Friday night.

It may work in the favour and leave space for the likes of Sancho, Madueke and Jackson to take advantage.

The teams also met in the cup last weekend with Brighton coming out on top 2-1.

The 22-year-old sits 2nd only behind Mo Salah in FPL points scored this season with an impressive total of 173 that includes 14 goals & 8 assists, a brilliant return for a midfielder.

  1. Erling Haaland (14.7m)
  2. Expected points: 5.78

In his 5 appearances against this weekend’s opponents Newcastle, Norwegian goal machine Erling Haaland has yet to lose against the Geordies.

It’s a good record that Pep Guardiola will hope his side can maintain having been undone by a last-minute winner from Real Madrid in Europe in midweek.

It’s been a turbulent season for the league champions with uncertainty surrounding their status in the League as the charges hand over the club.

Having bagged twice against Madrid, 24-year-old Haaland will be full of confidence heading into this weekend’s clash with 6th placed Newcastle.

The two teams sit on the same amount of points (41) in what is a huge match in the race to secure Champions League football next season.

  • Ollie Watkins (8.9m)
  • Expected points: 10.36

Aston Villa’s talismanic striker has a huge opportunity in Gameweek 25 with two fixtures—a home clash against Ipswich followed by a trip to Anfield. Having returned to full fitness after an injury concern, Watkins will be keen to add to his 116 points this season, making him one of the highest-scoring forwards in FPL.

“Mings and Ollie Watkins have trained this morning with the group and they are in the squad.”

Villa’s first fixture against Ipswich presents a prime chance for Watkins to return to the scoresheet. The newly-promoted side has struggled defensively away from home, and with Villa Park proving to be a fortress under Unai Emery, the England international could thrive. While Liverpool away will be a tougher test, Arne Slot’s side did show defensive vulnerabilities in their 2-2 draw to Everton. The Liverpool coach will also be serving a ban due to receiving a red card in the fracas after the game. Watkins’ pace on the counter-attack could be key, especially if Villa opt for a more direct approach. At 18.4% ownership, he’s a strong captaincy candidate for those looking to capitalise on the double gameweek.

  1. Alexander Isak (9.5m)
  2. Expected points: 4.82

It’s been an outstanding season so far for Newcastle’s frontman and it’s no surprise he is one of the hottest prospects in Europe at the moment.

The Swedish International has bagged 17 league goals for Eddie Howe’s men so far this season and interest from clubs around Europe for his signature is growing week-on-week.

For such an ‘affordable’ price of 9.5m, he has almost become a must-have FPL asset.

With a tough schedule ahead for the Toon Army in the next few weeks, they will see their trip to the Etihad this weekend as an opportunity to take a massive step forward in the race to secure Champions League football for next season.

Qualification for Europe’s top competition is their best chance of keeping hold of their talisman Isak beyond this season.

FPL GW25 Best Captain Options: The Surprise Pick

  • Jarrod Bowen (7.3m)
  • Expected points: 4.89

Having returned from injury recently, the Hammers captain seems to be enjoying life under new manager Graeme Potter.

He scored in his first appearance in their 2-1 defeat to Chelsea in their last Premier League match.

This weekend they welcome Brentford to the London Stadium in a big match for both teams as they search for form having gone through rough spells recently.

The lively frontman will fancy his chances of getting on the scoresheet against a Brentford side that are leaking goals at will at the moment.

With only 1 clean sheet in their last 6 matches, Thomas Frank’s men will have their work cut out to contain the England International throughout the 90 minutes.

We feel having returned from injury now is the perfect time to bring the 28-year-old into your team and possibly trust him with the captaincy ahead of GW25.
