Real Madrid will have a new captain next season as Luka Modric will take over the armband from Nacho Fernandez, whose departure from the club was announced earlier this week.

The 38-year-old veteran midfielder has been at Real Madrid for 12 years now and has etched his name in the storied history of the club.

In his time at the Santiago Bernabeu, Modric has achieved great things and is already a legend of the club. Despite that, the hunger for success and the burning desire to scale greater heights remains intact.

As such, the midfield superstar has now set four key goals for the 2024/25 season – his first one as the main captain, reports AS.

1. Most trophies as a Real Madrid player

The first and probably the greatest of the goals that Modric has in his mind heading into the new season is to become the Real Madrid player with the most number of trophies in the history of the club.

Following last season’s three trophies, Modric took his tally with the Merengues to 26 – already the highest, but he shares the record with Nacho. And the Croatian aims to go past his former teammate and sit alone at the top.

Modric will get a chance to achieve that goal as early as August 14 when Real Madrid face Atalanta in the UEFA Super Cup.

If not then, he will have six more chances in La Liga, Copa del Rey, Spanish Super Cup, UEFA Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, and FIFA Intercontinental Cup.

2. Win all seven competitions

As mentioned above, Real Madrid will be participating in as many as seven competitions in the 2024/25 season.

And, Modric is targeting to win each of those trophies, which, if accomplished, would be unprecedented and historic. And the Croatian international would be the captain that would have led Real Madrid to that success.

3. Seven-time Champions League winner

Another goal of Modric’s heading into the 2024/25 season is to become the player to win the UEFA Champions League for a record seven times.

At the moment, there are four footballers who have won a whopping six Champions Leagues -Modric himself, along with Dani Carvajal, Nacho and Toni Kroos. Another European success next term would see Modric and Carvajal move clear at the top of the mountain.

4. Go past Ferenc Puskas’ record

The final goal that Modric has heading into the 2024/25 season, which is certain to accomplish, is becoming the oldest footballer to play for Real Madrid.

Currently, the record is held by the legendary Ferenc Puskas, who was 39 years and 36 days old when he played a Cup match for Los Blancos in 1966.

Modric can surpass Puskas’ achievement as soon as he plays a game after October 17 and write his name in the record books once again.
