Toronto FC veteran Lorenzo Insigne admits he dreams of returning to Napoli in the twilight of his illustrious playing career. Before departing his homeland for Major League Soccer in 2022, he spoke about staying at Stadio Diego Armando Maradona for life.
Insigne joined Napoli as a 15-year-old. After coming through the academy, he became the club’s captain, making over 400 appearances for the Partenopei. However, after failing to win the Scudetto with his boyhood side, he left Italy two years ago to link up with Toronto.
“You can’t live without Naples. If Conte called me? In Naples, you can’t say no. If he called me, I’ll already be there in Castel Volturno.“
However, it’s hard to imagine Insigne’s dream coming true. Plagued with injuries, the former Napoli winger only scored four times in 23 games in 2024. He only started half of Toronto’s MLS fixtures this calendar year, ending the season without a goal in the club’s last 13 league games after June 15.
