Lindelof is a free agent after leaving United at the end of his contract, and he brings much-needed experience and Premier League quality to the table for Villa .

Villa are in advanced talks to sign the 30-year-old, according to The Athletic.

He made 25 appearances across all competitions last term and will provide quality squad depth for the Midlands club at the back.

Emery wants to win the Europa League with Villa, having achieved the feat at his previous clubs – three times with Sevilla and once with Villarreal.

However, the Spaniard needs to strengthen his defence to boost his chances of competing strongly in Europe and domestically.

Journalist Fabrizio Romano claims Lindelof will be getting a two-year deal, and signing him is a positive move by Villa.

They were initially keen on signing Toulouse centre-back Jaydee Canvot, but he is joining Crystal Palace instead.

They signed Yasin Ozcan from Kasimpasa earlier in the summer, but have sent him on loan to Belgian Pro League club Anderlecht.

Villa will strive to secure their first Premier League victory of the season when they host Crystal Palace later today.

They started the new campaign with a goalless draw against Newcastle United before losing 1-0 to Brentford last weekend.

The Midlands club have been unable to splash the cash this summer after UEFA fined them for breaking their financial rules.

As a result, they have to settle for free agents and loan deals, and Lindelof is unlikely to be the only player joining them before the deadline tomorrow.
