Forget Harry Kane – Sheringham tells Man Utd to sign 54 G/A EPL star deemed ‘best striker around’

Manchester United legend Teddy Sheringham explains why the club should gun for Alexander Isak instead of Harry Kane.

With Marcus Rashford out of Carrington, and Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee failing to score on a consistent basis, signing a top-notch marksman will be an absolute priority for the club heading into next summer’s transfer session. However, the identity of the newcomer remains anyone’s guess.

While reports from all over Europe continue to link the Red Devils with a Sporting CP bomber Viktor Gyokeres, Ruben Amorim’s old pupil is only one of several options.

In recent days, a sensational theory claimed Kane could be on his way out of Bayern Munich in the summer thanks to a €82-million release clause.

But while Sheringham would have loved to see his old employers sign the England captain a couple of years ago, he’s less enthusiastic about this prospect nowadays, as he prefers to see a younger profile making the move to Old Trafford.

Sheringham believes Aleksander Isak is the ideal profile for Man Utd

Hence, the 58-year-old urges INEOS to pursue Isak instead, although he’s unsure if the Sweden international would be too enticed about joining the Red Devils in this particular period.

“The problems all started two years ago when they didn’t make a bid for Harry Kane, the best available centre forward, the leader of football, and a professional at the top of his game,” said Sheringham in his interview with Finaria.it (via The Telegraph).

“That’s what Manchester United used to do. They’ve set their stall out since then and said, look, we’re not going for top players. They weren’t in for Declan Rice, who would have run the midfield. He’s going for 100 million. That’s what Man United used to do: they broke the bank and got the top players in.

“So, you’re asking me now, two years later, when it should have been dealt with two years ago. Is Harry Kane the right man now? Probably not. I know he’s still scoring goals for Bayern Munich, but I don’t know if it would have the same impression on everybody if they were to get him now.

“United need to start going for younger guns, but I mean, who’s out there? Would Isak come away from Newcastle to go to Man United at the moment? You’d like to think he would, being a Man United fan, but I’m not so sure he would, so the further they fall down the pecking order, the less chance they’ve got of signing top players.’

The Swedish striker is only 24, and has been one of the most consistent goal threats in the Premier League this season, scoring 19 goals in 29 appearances. The Newcastle United star now boasts 48 goals and eight assists in 74 EPL outings. Isak was also labelled as the best striker around by his teammate Bruno Guimaraes.
