Liverpool are on the cusp of completing their second signing of the summer, which could spell trouble for Colombian forward Luis Diaz.

According to The Athletic, the Reds have scheduled a medical for Florian Wirtz ahead of finalising his club-record move from Bayern Leverkusen.

Liverpool have agreed a club-record fee of £116 million plus add-ons for the German playmaker.

Leverkusen had initially set a £127.7m asking price for their prized asset, but Liverpool had no plans of matching those lofty demands.

The agreed deal was slightly below Leverkusen’s asking price, but it was enough to convince them to let Wirtz go with two years left on his contract.

Wirtz was heavily linked with a move to Bayern Munich, but Leverkusen were reluctant to strengthen the reigning Bundesliga champions.

Manchester City were also interested, but Wirtz made it clear that he favoured a move to Anfield should he leave Germany. He’s now on the cusp of getting his wish.

The attacking midfielder enjoyed a stellar 2024/25 season, scoring 16 goals and providing 15 assists in 45 appearances across all competitions. Although it wasn’t enough to help Leverkusen retain their crown.

His move to Liverpool will reunite him with former Leverkusen teammate Jeremie Frimpong, who moved to Anfield earlier this summer after his €35m (£30m) release clause was activated.

Wirtz’s move to Liverpool could spell trouble for Luis Diaz, who has been heavily linked with a move away from Merseyside this summer.

Diaz is wanted by Barcelona and relishes the chance to join the Spanish champions.

Liverpool have not officially put him on the chopping block, but his place in the squad will be vulnerable once Wirtz’s transfer is confirmed.
