Must-watch games in the Champions League this week

AC Milan vs Liverpool

Kickoff: Tuesday, 8pm

With just the 13 Champions League and European Cup titles between these two clubs, we are being treated to a clash of two giants of the continental game on Tuesday evening.

AC Milan are not the force they were when they crossed swords with Liverpool in the 2005 and 2007 deciders, but they have managed to be a regular top four side in Serie A again following a few years in the doldrums.

New manager Paulo Fonseca has gotten off to a slow start at the San Siro, but his side are coming off the back of a 4-0 win over Venezia at the weekend.

A little bit of intrigue has been added to this fixture after Liverpool lost to Nottingham Forest on Saturday. Consecutive defeats would be a major setback for Arne Slot.

Man City vs Inter

Kickoff: Wednesday, 8pm

TV Channel: TNT Sports 1, TNT Sports Ultimate

A repeat of the 2023 Champions League final that saw Manchester City claim the Treble, this encounter pits the champions of England and Italy against each other.

Inter Milan offer a tough test on the opening week of the competition having put together a strong squad featuring the likes of Lautaro Martinez, Marcus Thuram, Benjamin Pavard and Nicolo Barella. Although it also contains veterans of Premier League yore such as Marko Arnautovic, Matteo Darmian and Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

With two wins and two draws, the Nerazzurri have begun the campaign unbeaten, but City come into this match with a spotless record so far.

Atalanta vs Arsenal

Kickoff: Thursday, 8pm

TV Channel: TNT Sports 1

I guess this is Anglo-Italian week, because Arsenal will be the third Premier League outfit to take on opposition from Serie A on matchday one.

Atalanta return to the Champions League after two years away having finished fourth in the league last season. They have pedigree in Europe, having smashed Liverpool and broken Bayer Leverkusen’s unbeaten campaign en route to Europa League glory.

A mixed start to 2024/25 has seen them win two and lose two while scoring eight goals and conceding the same number. They have been one of the most interesting teams to watch over the past half decade or more and that remains the case.

This feels like the year Arsenal have to deliver silverware in some shape or form after steadily growing into one of the best teams in the world. Thursday’s trip to Bergamo could be the first step on the way to winning this competition for the first time in their history.

Monaco vs Barcelona

Kickoff: Thursday, 8pm

TV Channel: TNT Sports 2

Barcelona have gotten off to a blistering start in La Liga, winning their opening five games with a plus-13 goal difference. They are not messing about under new boss Hansi Flick.

Monaco have also started well, winning three and drawing one of four matches. Admittedly, those victories came against relatively weak teams in Ligue 1, but they’ve only conceded once so far.

Having failed to impress in Europe over the past five years, culers will be hoping Barça can take their league form into the Champions League and challenge for a sixth crown.

Atletico Madrid vs Leipzig

Kickoff: Thursday, 8pm

TV Channel: TNT Sports 4

Uefa have packed a bunch of enticing ties into Thursday evening, so we are going to have triple screen the action that night.

Atletico Madrid made a splash in the summer transfer window, signing Julian Alvarez, Conor Gallagher, Robin Le Normand and former Crystal Palace flop Alexander Sorloth (who has been genuinely very good in Spain in recent seasons). It will be fascinating to see how Diego Simeone’s side look in Europe.

Leipzig are never the neutral’s favourite, but the east German outfit are never cowed by the Champions League’s established aristocracy. This one should be a competitive matchup.
