Five English players have been nominated for the 2025 Women’s Ballon d’Or following their Euros success for the Lionesses.
Lucy Bronze, Hannah Hampton, Chloe Kelly, Alessia Russo and Leah Williamson feature on the list of 30 nominees, joining two-time winners Aitana Bonmati and Alexia Putellas on the esteemed list.
Bronze and Hampton were instrumental in Chelsea’s season which saw them win a domestic treble, remaining invincible in the league in the process.
Meanwhile, Kelly, Russo and Williamson also played a part in Arsenal’s Champions League victory in May, where they overcame a Barcelona side who were playing in their fifth consecutive final.
Williamson captained England to a second Euros trophy in three years, while Russo and Kelly played leading parts in the final against Spain. Russo scored the equalising goal to take the match the distance, and Kelly slotted home the winning penalty in the shootout.
Michelle Agyemang is also nominated for the Kopa Trophy – the award for the best young player.
Here are the list of England stars up for the big prize, and who else is nominated…
Bronze was a crucial part of Sonia Bompastor’s dominant Blues. In July, she cemented her status as an England legend, admitting she played the whole tournament with a broken tibia.
When England seemed down and out at 2-0 in the quarter-final against Sweden, it was Bronze who found the fight to get England back in the game, scoring the first goal of the comeback, before Agyemang scored the equaliser. Her leadership was continuously praised by her England teammates.
The Blues shot stopper helped her side to a domestic treble and also proved key in England’s Euros success, making several big saves including in the penalty shoot-out win over Spain in the final.
Kelly started the season out of the Manchester City team and questioning her future but ended the campaign on a high, helping Arsenal to Champions League glory and playing a pivotal role in England’s Euros win with her performances off the bench.
The centre-forward scored 12 WSL goals and eight Champions League goals last season, helping her side to lift the latter competition. Her performances leading the line for the Lionesses were a big part of the team’s success this summer.
Lionesses captain Williamson won her second Euros thanks to some dominant performances at the back, as well as winning the Champions League with Arsenal.
