Current Fiorentina wingback Robin Gosens feels that Inter Milan were “the right step” for him when he joined despite the underwhelming transfer.

The German spoke to Italian outlet FirenzeViola.it. He blamed injuries and then the emergence of Federico Dimarco as a first-choice starter on the left flank for his failure to really leave his mark at Inter.

Gosens was a big name signing for Inter when he arrived from Atalanta in January of 2022.

When Inter signed Gosens, he had been at Atalanta for several seasons already. And he had established himself as one of the best wingbacks in Serie A if not all of Europe.

But Gosens never really reproduced his best form from La Dea in an Inter shirt.

When the German arrived, he was recovering from a long-term injury.

Then, when Gosens was ready to play, it was tough for him to ever dislodge Ivan Perisic from the starting spot on the left flank. The Croat had been in the form of his life.

After Perisic left, it seemed like Gosens would have the opportunity to make the starting spot his own at Inter.

But Federico Dimarco was also vying for the role. And the 2022-23 season was the one in which Dimarco – now one of Inter’s most important players – took the decisive step up in terms of quality.

Robin Gosens: “Inter Milan Were The Right Step For Me”

Gosens looked back on his move to Inter. “I asked myself many times why it didn’t work out,” he said.

“It was the right step for me at the right time.”

“I wanted to test myself at a big club,” Gosens noted. “Even if Atalanta are a big club now.”

“Unfortunately due to injuries and Dimarco exploding in form, it didn’t work out.”

As for why he moved to Union Berlin last summer, Gosens said that “I always dreamed of going back to the Bundesliga.”

“Because it was my home league. And playing in the Champions League, in the capital, was the right choice.”

“Unfortunately, it never felt quite right on a sporting level,” Gosens said. “And also in terms of the city.”

“I couldn’t wait to return to Italy,” Gosens said of joining Fiorentina.
