Two weeks after he saw himself rather unfairly robbed of a chance at a Bundesliga record, Augsburg goalkeeper Finn Dahmen was back in high spirits yesterday. The reasons were obvious. A 2-1 away win over Bochum enabled the Fuggerstädter to snap a two-match league winless run. The three points on the day also officially guaranteed Augsburg Bundesliga football next season.
It always proves a joyous day whenever Augsburg manage to win the fight against relegation. Irrespective of when the day comes (and it has sometimes come on the final day of the season), the Bavarian Swabians get to celebrate the extension of their streak. Since their historic first ever top flight promotion ahead of the 2011/12 Bundesliga season, the FCA have never been relegated.
Dahmen made eight saves and was outstanding.
“We can be really proud,” Dahmen said of the hard-fought win that handed his club 15 straight years in the top division. “It’s quite difficult in front of this [Bochum] crowd. I think that’s why we started playing football, because it was a dream to play in front of a crowd like that. Then, of course, it’s cool that it turned out the way it did today.“
“That sounds good, of course,” Dahmen said of the fact that – in 10th place on 42 points – Augsburg still have a chance to qualify for Europe. “Now we’re going into the last few games with a lot of anticipation and we’ll see what’s possible. We’ll give our all to move up a place or two.”
