Earlier this week it was announced that coach Robin van Persie has temporarily taken Jeyland Mitchell out of his Feyenoord plans. This is because the 20-year-old defender, who came over from Costa Rica last summer for 2.5 million euros, is reportedly a danger to Igor Paixão, among others, due to his ‘youthful enthusiasm’.
According to Martijn Krabbendam of Voetbal International, “He is training with Jong Feyenoord. That is not only due to the development of Givairo Read. But, let’s put it this way: Mitchell is a player who trains the way he plays.”
“He is a player who does not shy away from duels and does not withdraw his leg. In his youthful enthusiasm, he forgets with every fifty-fifty duel with Paixão: that we still need him against PSV. No, he thinks: that ball is mine, no matter what.”
It is said to be one of the reasons why Mitchell is not on the training field with the first team. “At this stage of the season, you also have to pay attention to injuries. You can appreciate that attitude, but also because the defence is strained already, he trains with the Jong team. He is a special player. He is rock hard.”
