The Royals will have a couple of key regrets following the end of the summer window, following a very quiet transfer period.

League One side Reading only made one signing during the summer transfer window, due to their ownership situation.

Wolverhampton Wanderers winger Chem Campbell arrived on a short-term loan deal until January during the final hours of deadline day - and his arrival is much-needed following the departure of Femi Azeez.

With Azeez heading to Millwall, a replacement was desperately needed and Campbell, who has already played at this level before for the likes of Charlton Athletic and Wycombe Wanderers, could be a real asset at the Select Car Leasing Stadium.

The Royals needed their takeover situation to be sorted if they were to sign more players - and the fact they were unable to make full use of the free agent and loan markets during the summer will be frustrating for them.

They can still sign free agents, but many of the better options in that market have been snapped up already.

With this in mind, they will need to be creative if a takeover is sorted and they are finally cleared to bring more players in.

Ideally, the centre-back, left-back and striker departments all need additions - and it wouldn't harm the Royals to bring in another winger either.

With the summer window proving to be a depressing one for the third-tier outfit, we take a look at what their two biggest transfer regrets are likely to be.

The Femi Azeez misunderstanding at Reading FC

When Azeez left to join the Lions, manager Ruben Selles had initially hoped that the sale would allow him to recruit a replacement.

However, he was very upset to learn that wasn't the case, with an internal misunderstanding meaning the winger had been sold with no guarantee of a replacement being able to be recruited.

Thankfully for the Royals, the EFL sanctioned a short-term loan deal for Campbell.

This could have turned into a disastrous situation though, with the Berkshire side having very few senior options out wide, even with Campbell coming in.

Replacing a player of Azeez's quality was always going to be difficult, but no replacement coming in at all would have been horrific, with the 23-year-old proving to be an important player last term.

The Berkshire club will regret this misunderstanding, because it could have proved to be costly.

According to a report from Football Insider, the third-tier club were attempting to get a loan deal over the line for Coventry City striker Fabio Tavares on deadline day.

With Brandon Thomas-Asante and Norman Bassette both arriving at the Coventry Building Society Arena this summer, that could have given Tavares the opportunity to make the move to the Select Car Leasing Stadium.

He could have been a good signing for the Royals too, with Sam Smith needing more competition up top.

Kelvin Ehibhatiomhan can play there and so can Jayden Wareham, but the former has proved to be a much more threatening player on the wing and Wareham isn't the most experienced player at a senior level.

If Smith picks up an injury, Selles' side could struggle massively and that's why Tavares could have been a good option to have in their matchday squad.
