Federico Chiesa’s move to Liverpool was always a gamble. Signed late in last summer’s transfer window, the 27-year-old has struggled to make an impact at Anfield. So far this season, he has played less than 400 minutes across all competitions, scoring just twice, both in cup matches.
Fitness issues, injuries, and competition for places have prevented the Italian from showcasing his talent in a Liverpool shirt. Chiesa does not appear to be a player the manager Arne Slot was particularly keen on, as his signing felt more like a club decision to compensate for a quiet transfer window. The Dutchman has consistently preferred Luis Díaz, Diogo Jota, or Cody Gakpo on the left wing, and that preference was evident in Liverpool’s Champions League Round of 16 loss to Paris Saint-Germain, where even a half-fit Gakpo was selected ahead of him.
Now, reports suggest that Chiesa is on his way back to Italy. It also says Liverpool is open to parting ways with him, either through a sale or a loan. However, his high wages remain a significant obstacle, as most Serie A clubs would struggle to match his current salary.
According to Calciomercato, Napoli and their manager Antonio Conte are monitoring Chiesa’s situation ahead of the summer. Napoli’s sporting director Giovanni Manna, who previously worked with Chiesa at Juventus, is reportedly keeping tabs on the winger.
Additionally, Calciomercato reports that a new transfer avenue has opened, linking Liverpool with Lazio in a potential swap deal. As per journalist Ekrem Konur, Lazio admires Chiesa and could be willing to negotiate a deal involving winger Gustav Isaksen, who has impressed in Rome this season. An exchange, with Liverpool potentially adding a balancing payment in Lazio’s favor, could facilitate the move, though Chiesa’s salary demands remain a potential roadblock.
With the 2026 World Cup on the horizon, Chiesa may have to accept a pay cut if he hopes to revive his international career. His chances of securing regular minutes at Liverpool look slim unless injuries or other drastic circumstances force a change. A key figure in Italy’s Euro 2020 triumph, Chiesa has not been called up to the national team since the conclusion of Euro 2024, further underscoring the need for a fresh start.
