Erik ten Hag’s position at Manchester United is under threat after Manchester United’s recent draw with relegation-threatened Burnley.

The Dutch manager has been under intense fire over the past few months with Manchester United’s hope of Champions League football next season fading.

They may well get Europa League, but Ten Hag might not be the man leading them. Here are GetFootball’s top five picks to replace him.

5. Gareth Southgate

Southgate has done a wonderful job since taking over as England manager, leading them to their first major final since 1966 at Euro 2020. They may have lost, but England have come a long way, thanks in no small part to the manager.

It’s unclear whether his considered and empathetic managerial style would translate to club management, but it may be exactly what Manchester United players need after the reported harshness of Ten Hag.

New owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is said to be a fan, but Southgate would have some serious work winning over the die-hard United supporters.

4. Graham Potter

Another manager Sir Jim is reportedly a big fan of, Potter has been out of a job since his tumultuous time at Chelsea. The continued mess at the West London club may suggest he wasn’t the issue.

Much like Southgate, Potter is widely regarded as a manager who is empathetic to the modern footballer. Manchester United players have never really had the luxury of being able to feel vulnerable, perhaps that could help.

Given Potter’s Premier League experience, Manchester United could do a lot worse. Don’t judge Potter by his time at Chelsea.

3. Ruben Amorim

The young Portuguese coach is arguably one of the most exciting coaches in European football. With Liverpool reportedly choosing Arne Slot over him, he may be eager to take charge of one of their biggest rivals. Talks with West Ham have also reportedly ended.

If Amorim were to take over, there would have to be some serious movement this summer in order for Manchester United to be able to play his preferred formation and tactic.

The club have been yearning for a mass clear-out since Jose Mourinho was in charge, and hiring Amorim could be the springboard they need.

2. Jose Mourinho

Speaking of Mourinho, how about a second round? The old Portuguese maestro led Manchester United to their most successful season post-Ferguson before it spectacularly blew up.

It wouldn’t be a long-term appointment, it never is with Jose, but he could help instill a winning mentality in the players that have been clearly lacking it.

Manchester United need trophies, there are few better than Mourinho at winning them.

The divisive German manager has announced when will be leaving Bayern Munich at the end of the season after being unable to secure the Bundesliga title.

Bayern fans may have made a petition asking him to stay, but Tuchel seems set on leaving the club, regardless of whether they go on to win the Champions League or not.

When Tuchel joined Chelsea he said, “We want to create a team no one wants to play against”. That’s exactly what he did as they lifted their second Champions League. Manchester United used to be like that, perhaps Tuchel is the man to bring back their aura.
