Chelsea are closing in on a deal for 22-year-old Xavi Simons, who left PSG earlier this year, though Manchester City are also keeping an eye on the Dutch midfielder. No matter where he ends up, PSG are set to cash in from the move.

Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano reported that RB Leipzig have accepted an €80 million offer for Simons, with €55 million due upfront. Simons is under contract with Leipzig until June 2027, and PSG smartly included a sell-on clause that guarantees them a cut of any future transfer.

That approach has already worked in their favor. Adam Crafton of The Athletic pointed out that PSG pocketed €17 million (£15 million) from Hugo Ekitiké’s recent transfer to Liverpool thanks to the same kind of clause.

On Monday, Romano appeared on DAZN to share the latest regarding Simons’ heading to the Blues and noted that a deal is nearing completion, as he even gave a percentage.

“So the percentage for Xavi Simons to Chelsea remains at 85 percent, still very optimistic, because Xavi Simons told all the other clubs,” Romano said. “We had rumors about Bayern, rumors about Man City, rumors about several clubs. Xavi Simons wants to go to Chelsea. Xavi Simons is waiting for Chelsea.

“Xavi Simons has an agreement on personal terms and a contract with Chelsea. So he’s just basically patiently waiting—just waiting for a green light. But what’s needed is for Chelsea to sell players. And so Xavi Simons, at that point, can arrive.”

Recently, Sky Sport Germany’s Florian Plettenberg reported that Bayern Munich have shown serious interest in Simons, but a deal seems unlikely. The main reason is that Simons is focusing on joining Chelsea. A verbal agreement with the club is already in place and considered certain. However, the final terms between the two clubs are still pending.
