Liverpool’s transfer business - both incoming and outgoing - appeared to take a step forward on Tuesday. We had news that Alexander Isak was back in play with Liverpool ready to test Newcastle’s resolve with a bid.
But the Reds also remain in the game for Hugo Ekitike and it looks like the club will be getting one or the other before the season begins.
To finance the arrival of a striker though, Liverpool WILL require outgoings. And the day also brought confirmation that a bid from Bayern Munich for Luis Diaz had been rejected out of hand.
Fabrizio Romano reported on his YouTube channel that the deal was valued at €67.5m. Liverpool’s stance is that Diaz is NOT for sale.
He is under contract until 2027 and still features as a big part of Arne Slot’s plans. Diaz scored 13 Premier League goals last season and the Reds won’t part easily with him - even if contract talks have fizzled out.
However, what was implied in the Romano report is that Liverpool are not necessarily saying “no” to Bayern. They are saying “increase the bid and then we’ll talk”.
“Liverpool are not accepting €60m, €65m, €67m — these numbers are not enough to convince Liverpool to sell Luis Díaz,” the Italian transfer supremo said.
But Bayern WILL be back.
They have honed in on Diaz because of their current winger predicament. Although Jamal Musiala plays centrally, they do require another attacker in light of his terrible injury. And with Leroy Sane departing for Galatasaray, it leaves the German club a little light up top.
Having tried for Florian Wirtz and Nico Williams - with additional reports of interest in Cody Gakpo - it now looks to FC Hollywood that Diaz is the most gettable of their targets.
“Bayern are going very big. The official bid has been rejected, but Bayern want to attack and try again for Luis Díaz,” Romano states.
“They are not leaving the conversation. They believe Luis Díaz can be a perfect signing. But again, Liverpool are rejecting this money, rejecting these proposals, because they believe Luis Díaz is worth more — with two years left on his contract.”
How much? Well, earlier in the day a price of over €100m was quoted by David Ornstein.
That might be a tad excessive - given Diaz’s age and contract predicament. Itt’s more likely that a deal gets done at around €80m. Even that would represent a sizeable profit on the £37.5m they paid to Porto back in 2022.
The transfer window is in full swing - with Richard Hughes working on multiple fronts. It very much looks like talks are only just beginning over Diaz - rather than ending. Let’s see how this one plays out.
