FA confirm charges for Liverpool, Everton & Arne Slot following Merseyside derby mayhem | OneFootball

The English Football Association (FA) have charged Liverpool and Everton - as well as Reds head coach Arne Slot and his assistant Sipke Hulshoff - in the aftermath of a manic Merseyside derby on Wednesday night.

A dramatic stoppage-time equaliser from Everton's James Tarkowski concluded a controversial and chaotic 2-2 draw at Goodison Park. Abdoulaye Doucoure's provocative celebration towards the Liverpool fans crammed into the away section after the final whistle was met with a shove from Curtis Jones, prompting a mass brawl between players, substitutes, stewards and police officers. As instigators, Doucoure and Jones were both shown second yellow cards.

Liverpool's coaching staff also lost their collective cool. Slot's long-serving assistant Hulshoff was dismissed after a heated exchange with referee Michael Oliver before his boss also approached the official.

Slot would not delve into the details of his conversation with Oliver but admitted that he "should have acted differently". After a confusing series of conflicting statements from the Premier League, the FA confirmed on Friday afternoon that both clubs as well as Slot and Hulshoff have been officially charged.

Each team allegedly "failed to ensure their players and/or technical area occupants did not behave in an improper and/or provocative way".

Slot and Hulshoff were accused of acting "in an improper manner and/or used insulting and/or abusive words and/or behaviour" towards the officials. It was also alleged that Hulshoff continued acting "in an improper manner and/or used insulting and/or abusive words and/or behaviour" after receiving his red card.

The four parties have until next Wednesday (19 February) to respond to the charges.

The FA's official statement did not include any detail of the punishments that Slot or the clubs could face, although the suggestion is that Liverpool's manager may face an extended ban given he has already collected three yellow cards this season.
