I think fair to say that when Newcastle United fans hear there is a Monday night Premier League match at St James’ Park, not many supporters are very happy with the news.
Almost every time it is due to Sky Sports forcing a move from the Saturday.
As is the case with tonight, Newcastle v West Ham, the very final game of this round of matches.
This made all the worse by the fact it is an additional wait after yet another soul-destroying international fortnight.
I think you will be surprised to hear that tonight’s game, will be only the fourth Monday night match at St James’ Park in the Premier League, since December 2012.
Maybe you will find it even more surprising when you see what Newcastle’s Monday night league record is, when it comes to St James’ Park contests in the Premier League era.
Premier League Monday night record – Newcastle United matches at St James’ Park:
Newcastle 4 Sheffield Wednesday 2 (September 1993)
Newcastle 0 Man U 1 (March 1996)
Newcastle 3 West Ham 0 (March 1996)
Newcastle 4 Aston Villa 3 (September 1996)
Newcastle 1 Liverpool 1 (December 1996)
Newcastle 1 Spurs 1 (April 1999)
Newcastle 2 Derby 0 (October 1999)
Newcastle 1 Fulham 1 (April 2002)
Newcastle 4 West Ham 0 (August 2002)
Newcastle 2 Middlesbrough 0 (November 2002)
Newcastle 3 Fulham 1 (January 2004)
Newcastle 2 Man U 2 (January 2007)
Newcastle 3 Spurs 1 (October 2007)
Newcastle 2 Man City 2 (October 2008)
Newcastle 2 Aston Villa 0 (November 2008)
Newcastle 0 Portsmouth 0 (April 2009)
Newcastle 3 Middlesbrough 1 (May 2009)
Newcastle 3 Wigan 0 (December 2012)
Newcastle 1 Man U 1 (December 2021)
Newcastle 1 Arsenal 0 (May 2022)
Newcastle 0 Brighton 0 (May 2023)
Newcastle United Monday night Premier League record:
Played 21 Won 12 Drawn 8 Lost 1 Goals Scored 42 Goals Conceded 17
Quite astonishing, only one defeat on a Monday night at SJP in the Premier League.
Trust us though, that the one loss came in the most important of all Monday night NUFC home matches in this Premier League era.
Newcastle absolutely battered Man U back in March 1996, I lost count of the number of world class saves Peter Schmeichel made, including a fair few one on ones with Les Ferdinand, it just wasn’t to be. Then pretty much their only chance of the match, Cantona scored in the second half.
A win in that game and Newcastle would have won the title for sure, even a draw and it would have been almost definite.
How crucial tonight’s match turns out to be in the context of this season we await with interest. let’s just make sure that it is another win for the Monday night total.
