Don Goodman backs Hwang deal - but warns it may be out of reach

Birmingham City's ambition in the transfer market has been one of the defining stories of the summer window.

After storming to promotion with high-profile signings and a reinvigorated project, the Blues have continued to target top-tier talent.

Moves for Premier League-calibre players like Tommy Doyle and Demarai Gray, along with a reported £10 million spent on Celtic hero Kyogo Furuhashi, have made their intent crystal clear.

Wolves forward Hwang Hee-Chan is the latest big name to be linked to the Blues according to Birmingham Live, though reports suggest that the financial side of any potential transfer makes it highly unlikely.

Don Goodman reacts to Hwang Hee-Chan transfer rumours at Birmingham City

Don Goodman believes that Hwang Hee-Chan would be a stunning signing for Birmingham if they could pull off a deal for the Wolves striker this summer.

Speaking exclusively to Football League World, the Sky Sports pundit affirmed that such a deal would raise eyebrows across the Championship.

“Yeah, Hwang Hee-Chan to Birmingham, I mean that would be jaw dropping if Birmingham could pull that off,” Goodman told FLW.

“What a signing he would be, to go with the other signings that they've made, I mean, good grief. It really would be a coup.”

“He didn't have much game time last season, I think he only started five Premier League games and that was disappointing, because the season before he was a mainstay at Wolves, scored 12 Premier League goals in 29 starts.

“So clearly shows the quality, you look at it - he’s a South Korean international, scores goals at international level. It'd really would elevate Birmingham, there’s no doubt about it.

“How on earth they would come within the bounds of financial fair play, I'm not really sure. It would probably mean that they'd have to get promoted next season as well in order to comply with that.

“But no, there's no doubt about it. It would be a signing, if they could pull it off, that would make the whole Championship sit up and take notice.”

What Hwang Hee-Chan rumours say about Birmingham's big ambitions

A move for Hwang Hee-Chan would undoubtedly mark one of the boldest statements of intent Birmingham City have made in recent memory.

His Premier League experience, international pedigree, and proven goalscoring record make him a player who could immediately elevate the squad’s quality and credibility.

But the reality is far more complex - Financial Fair Play restrictions, a deep existing forward line, and Wolves’ reported £21 million valuation all make this deal look increasingly out of reach.

While Birmingham have spent aggressively since their takeover, there's a limit to what even ambitious owners can justify without promotion.

In many ways, the rumour perhaps reflects the scale of Birmingham’s aspirations more than their current capabilities.

The club is clearly positioning itself as one with upward momentum and top-flight ambitions.

Even if a deal for Hwang doesn’t materialise, just being in the conversation for players of his calibre is a sign of Birmingham’s changing status - and a warning to the rest of the Championship.
