Don Goodman gives his opinion on Samuel Edozie's time on the south coast.

Former West Brom and Wolves striker Don Goodman understands why Southampton may be looking to part ways with Samuel Edozie this summer.

Edozie endured a tough 2024/25 campaign, being sent out on loan to Belgian giants Anderlecht for the season, after being a bit-part player in the Saints' promotion out of the Championship the previous term, starting just 16 league games.

A few short-term knocks meant that his time in the Belgian Pro League was stop-start, and he once again couldn't fashion a regular starting spot within the side.

Now, with Southampton back in the second tier, looking to turn a new page under Will Still, Edozie may be one of the players set to move on, with Liam Rosenior's Strasbourg in advanced talks with the former Manchester City academy man.

The 22-year-old still has a lot of potential, but he's just been unable to recognise that at St Mary's Stadium.

In an exclusive interview with Football League World, Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman acknowledged that Edozie has what it takes to succeed, which makes his lacklustre time on the south coast even more frustrating.

"Edozie is one of those players who we all acknowledge has huge talent within him, and his potential is enormous," he said.

"But he's 22 now, he has played well over 90 first-team games, and he's always been one of those players who leaves you wanting more end product.

"He's scored 10 goals, got seven assists in his career, and for someone with his ability, it isn't enough."

Six of those goals and three of those assists came at St Mary's during Southampton's last stint in the Championship in 2023/24. His best period came in a five-game spell in December that season, when he scored three and assisted one.

That was as good as it got, however, as he started just three league games in the rest of the season, and none in their successful play-off campaign.

"If Southampton can get a good price for him, then I would understand them wanting to cash in," Goodman concluded.

Southampton will do well to earn a profit on Samuel Edozie

Whilst the potential fee Strasbourg will have to part ways with to bring Edozie to France is yet to be disclosed, the Saints will be relying on Liam Rosenior's side to see the potential still untapped in the 22-year-old to earn a profit on the reported £10 million they paid Manchester City for him in 2022.

Edozie still has two years left on his contract, so Southampton aren't in a panic to offload him now or risk losing him for free, but a sale this summer would be ideal, as the winger doesn't seem to be high in the pecking order once again at his current club.

Plus, the longer Edozie remains at St Mary's, the less Southampton will be able to recoup for him.

There's no doubt that the 22-year-old could blossom into a player worth upwards of seven figures, but right now, it looks like a loss on their investment is inevitable.
