Blues have been linked with a Championship goalscoring record-holder.
Birmingham City were linked with a move for former Fulham and Newcastle United striker Aleksandar Mitrovic earlier this week.
Alex Crook of talkSPORT said on national radio that there is a chance that the Serbian centre-forward may leave his current club, Al-Hilal of the Saudi Pro League, and that Birmingham could be a potential landing spot for him.
These suggestions were played down by local reports from Birmingham Live, who stated that the American-owned Blues weren't pursuing a move for the 30-year-old, but, unsurprisingly, the links got a lot of Blues supporters very excited about what their recently ambitious club may be cooking up.
The last time Mitrovic played in the Championship, in the 2021/22 campaign, he broke the league's single-season record for goals, netting 43 times for Marco Silva's title-winning side.
Even though there is little to suggest that the Serbia international could be heading the way of St Andrew's, Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman has said that he more than understands why Crook's words caused such a stir.
He exclusively told Football League World: "I'm not sure how accurate or genuine reports that Birmingham were keen on Aleksandar Mitrovic are. I would imagine that he would be way beyond, at the minute, even what Birmingham City could afford, both in terms of a transfer fee and in terms of wages.
"So, yeah, we can talk about [it] hypothetically. Obviously, we saw what he did at Fulham the last time he played in the Championship, which was 43 goals in 44 games.
"He's going on and hitting similar levels of goals, but it doesn't really seem a very realistic link to me. But I understand why anybody would want Aleksandar Mitrovic. He's got that rare knack of finding scoring goals very easy, particularly for the last four or five years."
Birmingham have done everything but cease to amaze since they were taken over by Knighthead in the summer of 2023. For good and for bad, but mostly for good in recent times, they have made headlines for all sorts of surprising reasons, which is why there wasn't as dismissive a reaction to these links as there usually would be for every other League One winner.
The addition of Mitrovic would give the manager, Chris Davies, a ridiculous line-up of centre-forwards to choose from. He said, prior to the signing of Martin Ducksch from German side Werder Bremen, that he wanted more additions to be made up top.
Bringing in the 30-year-old Serbian may have been overkill, or maybe it would kill off any chances of them not being promoted for the second straight season.
