The Trotters have struggled for goals at the start of this season and are hot on the tail of the Bhoys’ Johnny Kenny.
Bolton Wanderers are reportedly interested in signing Celtic striker Johnny Kenny.
That’s according to journalist Alan Nixon, via his Patreon page, where he revealed that the Trotters are preparing one final move at the end of the window.
He signed a contract extension until 2029 earlier this month, but that has not entirely called off Bolton’s chase.
We asked Sky Sports pundit Lee Hendrie whether this deal is one the Greater Manchester side need to try and get over the line.
Speaking exclusively to Football League World, Hendrie said: “Bolton looking at Johnny Kenny from Celtic, 22 years of age, had a few loan spells out.
“He’s a centre-forward that maybe they just needed at this current time.
“Bolton are pushing this season and obviously, potential promotion pushes, and yes, you do have to look at Bolton this season and feel that they do want to be going places.
“Yes, they've got decent players in that squad, and maybe him dropping down to League One from Celtic might just be a real key signing for them.
“As I said, having potential goalscorers, which he can prove to be at that level, I think this would be a really good signing.
“Look, goals have been hard to come by, particularly with the attacking players that they have in the squad, they might just need that to kickstart it all off.”
For a number of years now, Bolton’s primary objective has been to get out of League One and back into the Championship.
But already, at this early point in the season, they have slipped back into 15th place, seven points behind league leaders Cardiff City.
The Trotters have conceded fewer goals than Stockport County and Barnsley, currently occupying the play-off places.
It’s therefore clear that scoring is where the problem lies, with Bolton on half of the 10 goals already registered by Huddersfield Town.
These are the teams Bolton will need to compete with if they finally want to achieve their promotion goals, and so far the early signs are not what all involved would hope.
Kenny has had a productive few loan spells over in Ireland, with 13 goals in 29 appearances last year, added to six goal involvements in six games in the Conference League with Shamrock Rovers.
At 22 years old, he still looks an exciting prospect, if he can convert those goalscoring instincts to League One football.
But his capture would not necessarily be positive news for Hull City loanee Mason Burstow.
The Tigers’ forward is the same age as Kenny and has, up until now, been Bolton’s primary striker, picking up two goals in his first five outings.
However, given the age and relative inexperience of the pair, striking a permanent deal for Kenny would surely create questions over Burstow’s playing time, with Bolton likely to put their own asset’s development ahead of Hull’s.
