Lee Hendrie has told FLW his verdict on the possibility of Birmingham City signing Nathan Redmond this summer

Lee Hendrie has claimed that a move for Nathan Redmond would make a lot of sense for Birmingham City this summer if he departs Burnley.

It was reported in December by Football Insider that the Blues were eyeing a potential move for the winger, which didn’t come to fruition during the January market.

The 31-year-old began his career with the Blues, coming through the academy system, before moving to Norwich City in 2013.

But he is set to be out of contract in the summer, which could open the door to a return to St. Andrew’s 12 years on from his original exit.

Hendrie has claimed that Redmond’s experience could be a valuable addition to Chris Davies’ side for life back in the Championship.

He believes the club will need a balance of youth and experience, and the forward’s previous connection to the team will also be a worthwhile asset to have.

Birmingham obviously I said about their squad, squad depth is going to be so important and having a blend of youth, experience, and obviously that link with Nathan Redmond being at the club and knowing what it’s all about, and being local,” Hendrie exclusively told Football League World.

“I know that they were interested in signing him, not this season.

“He’s out of contract in the summer, so it wouldn’t surprise me.

“Again, if you can get experienced players in the building, and you haven’t got to pay massive fees for them because they’re a free transfer, and that’s what Nathan will be in the summer.

“I think it would be a no-brainer because he knows the Championship and the experience added along with having younger players in that squad is quite massive in the Championship.

“It would be a great move for him, and I think it would be a good fit for Birmingham too.”

Birmingham are currently 12 points clear of second place Wrexham at the top of the League One table.

Redmond move isn’t needed for Birmingham

Redmond has struggled for fitness since moving to Burnley in 2023, playing a total of 13 times across two seasons.

While he would bring a lot of experience to this squad, he wouldn’t be much of an addition to Davies’ side in terms of contributing on the pitch.

If there is room to spare in the squad then perhaps it could be worth agreeing a one-year contract or something, as he can provide real leadership to the team.

But otherwise, it’s not a deal that Birmingham should be prioritising as they look to build a competitive Championship team.
